Seated Quarters
1838 25C No Drapery MS64+ PCGS. CAC. This is the first year of issue for this No Drapery design of the quarter dollar, struck during a transition from the Capped Bust motif to Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design. Walter Breen noted that coinage of the new design began on September 13, 1838, and from that point forward, 466,000 of these coins were minted prior to December 31. This high-end, Choice Mint State piece displays strong definition with lilac-gold and slate-gray color on both sides. The rims are extra high on each side, somewhat at the expense of the dentils and peripheral strike on the stars, yet the figure of Liberty is sharp head-to-foot and the eagle shows full details. A pair of small marks on the thigh pedigrees this important first-year type coin. Population: 37 in 64 (3 in 64+), 7 finer. CAC: 6 in 64, 6 finer (11/16).
