Proof Seated Quarters
1886 25C PR67+ PCGS. CAC. A nominal mintage of 886 proof Seated Liberty quarters was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1886, with all the coins struck for inclusion in the proof sets. Business strikes of this issue are quite rare, placing considerable pressure on the small supply of proofs to satisfy collector demand.
The present coin is an exceptional Superb Gem proof, devoid of contact marks or hairlines and patinated in rich lavender-gray, gold, violet, and pine-green hues. The fields are deeply mirrored and the only weakness in the relief elements is trivial softness on the left obverse stars, not unusual for the issue. The obverse exhibits modest cameo contrast. Population: 11 in 67 (3 in 67+), 0 finer. CAC: 7 in 67, 0 finer (11/16).
