Proof Barber Quarters
1897 25C PR68 PCGS. CAC. Noticeable field-motif contrast is present on the obverse, although the reverse is a bit too deeply toned to warrant a Cameo designation from PCGS. Rich hues of amber-gold, violet, and aquamarine encompass each side, and the underlying design elements showcase spectacular, full definition. By 1897, the novelty of the Barber quarter had passed and collectors' dislike of the design in general was fully reflected by the proof sales, which dropped to a then-all-time low of 731 pieces. A small number of high-end survivors are known, however, and they are in strong demand by modern-day specialists.
