Standing Liberty Quarters
1917-D 25C Type Two MS66+ Full Head PCGS. Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty design for the quarter was modified in 1917 to include, in part, a coat of chain-mail armor over Liberty's torso. As the first year of the new design, the 1917-D is a popular date with branch mint type collectors. Despite a substantial mintage of 6.2 million pieces, the 1917-D is an elusive issue at the MS66 grade level with the Full Head designation. This Denver issue is among the first in the series to exhibit considerable strike issues with regards to sharpness and evenness.
The present coin is a high-end Premium Gem, with sharply detailed design elements in most areas. Full Head definition is apparent, but a touch of the usual softness shows on a few shield rivets. The surfaces are impeccably preserved, with vibrant mint luster and a hint of pale gold toning. Population: 26 in 66 (2 in 66+) Full Head, 3 finer (10/16).
From The James Swan Collection of Standing Liberty Quarters.
The #1 PCGS Major Varieties Registry Set of Full Head Standing Liberty Quarters.
