Standing Liberty Quarters
1918/7-S 25C FS-101 AU58 NGC. The Mint was overworked at the end of 1917, with heavy demand for coinage in the wartime economy and a reduced staff. A number of notable hubbing errors were made during this period, including the famous 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter, which occurred when a working die was first impressed with a 1917-dated hub, then annealed and mistakenly hubbed a second time with a 1918-dated hub. A limited number of coins are known with the clear overdate that resulted, and the feature went unnoticed by the numismatic community until the 1930s, by which time most examples had become well-worn. The 1918/7-S is a sought-after key to the series today, and collectors prize examples in all grades and conditions. The NGC holder lists the old FS-008.5 number, but this issue is now classified as FS-101 in the popular Cherrypickers' Guide.
The present coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show a little of the usual softness on the head and shield rivets. Just a trace of actual wear is present and the surfaces are lightly abraded on both sides. Much original mint luster remains intact and the overall presentation is most appealing.
