Early Half Dollars
1795 50C 2 Leaves, Y Over Star, O-121, T-2, High R.4, Fine 12 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/1. A scarce variety with Y of LIBERTY punched over a previously punched star. The O-121 variety is always in demand for its blatant engraver's error -- the sole use of the heavily clashed obverse die, which cracked up the middle in its late stages. Three points of the overpunched star remain visible beneath the Y. Attractive bluish-gray toning covers both sides of this smoothly worn example. We note a minor rim bump above E in AMERICA, with light adjustment marks on the reverse margin that require a glass for viewing.
