Early Half Dollars
1801 50C O-101, T-2, R.3, XF40 ANACS. After producing a small quantity of Draped Bust, Small Eagle half dollars in 1796 and 1797, the Mint employed a new Heraldic Eagle reverse design in 1801, striking another 30,289 coins. These were the first of the new design, and are popular with type collectors today. This piece has pleasing light silver-gray surfaces with champagne, steel, and iridescent toning. The reverse is a trifle weak, but traces of luster remain.
