Early Half Dollars
1802 50C O-101, T-1, R.3, VF35 PCGS. Tompkins Die Stage 1/1. A single die pair was used to strike the 29,890 half dollars manufactured in 1802. Examples are scarce in the absolute sense, and the certified population falls off markedly in XF and higher grades. An even layer of friction occurs over boldly detailed design elements throughout this better-date half dollar. Each side shows a mix of gunmetal-gray, steel-blue, and golden-olive patina. There are no significant imperfections to report. Population: 28 in 35, 56 finer (10/16).
