Early Half Dollars
1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem, O-120a, T-28, R.4, AU58 PCGS Secure. Tompkins Die State 2/7. A large production of 839,576 Draped Bust half dollars was delivered in 1806, with 28 known die varieties to achieve the mintage. The present coin is an example of the rare O-120a variety, easily recognized by the medium-spread internal cud in the shield stripes on the reverse. This specimen is a splendid near-Mint piece, with a sharp strike and nearly full mint luster. The vibrant surfaces display areas of gold and pale-almond toning. Many diagnostic die cracks are evident including the crack across the tail feathers and a faint crack from the leaf to the base of RI. Population (all Pointed 6, Stem varieties): 43 in 58, 53 finer (11/16).
