Bust Half Dollars
1809 50C III Edge, O-107a, R.4, MS62 PCGS. A scarce and interesting variety, the O-107a is known for a multipronged network of ragged die cracks that originate as a heavy crack between stars 11 and 12 before branching out north, south, and west. The reverse displays multiple areas of die clashing, including triple embossed segments extending from the arrowheads into AMERICA. Despite it all, the strike is sharp on all of the devices and the surfaces are smooth and appealing. Pale-blue and peach-gold toning provide a pleasing, light patina over the lustrous surfaces.
The III Edge variety is of special importance to series specialists, who -- no doubt -- will keep a watchful eye on the bidding on this attractive Mint State example. The current Stephen Herrman report (Autumn, 2016) shows this exact coin at the top of the listing for the O-107a variety, tied with three other pieces at the MS62 level. Incrementally more scarce than the earlier die state O-107 and a possibly unimprovable representative of the near-terminal die stage, we expect Bust half enthusiasts to offer keen competition when this lot is called.
