Bust Half Dollars
1812/1 50C Small 8, O-102a, R.2, MS64 PCGS. The small 8 in the date and the remnants of an undertype 1 below the primary 2 identify the O-102 variety. A blurry die crack from the base of the second 1 to the stand of the overpunched 1 and the clash marks above the date identify the late die state O-102a.
Iridescent shades of magenta and greenish-gold toning enhance the pleasing surfaces of this near-Gem specimen, with scattered, minor signs of contact and vibrant mint luster underneath. The design elements are well-detailed, showing some of the usual flatness on four of the obverse stars. In the late die state, Steve Herrman's Autumn 2016 listing shows a single MS65 coin at the top of the Condition Census, followed by several MS64 entries (10/16).
