Bust Half Dollars
1815/2 50C O-101, R.2, AU55 PCGS. CAC. An 1812 obverse die was overdated and paired with a single reverse to strike 47,150 half dollars in 1815. The entire run was delivered to the Mint treasurer on January 10, 1816, the very same day a fire destroyed the Mint's rolling and drawing machines, putting the facility out of commission until 1817. The 1815/2 is the acknowledged key to the series and widely sought-after as such. This blatantly original Choice AU half exhibits largely violet-gray patina intermixed with splashes of powder-blue and peach-orange hues. Strongly struck motifs show minimal friction over the high points. A marvelous example that is sure to take a well-deserved place in a high-end set of Capped Bust halves. Population: 32 in 55, 31 finer. CAC: 4 in 55, 6 finer (11/16).
