Bust Half Dollars
1815/2 50C O-101a, R.3, AU55 NGC. The Mint struggled to produce any coinage at all in 1815, lacking silver bullion and suffering the residual effects that lingered from the War of 1812. Small mintages of quarters and half dollars were accomplished late in the year, with most of the quarters destined for Planters Bank in New Orleans and just 47,150 half dollars earmarked for much-needed local distribution.
The 1815/2 halves are in constant demand for date, type, and specialty collectors as well as for Bust half sets by date and Overton varieties. High-grade examples such as this Choice AU coin are especially coveted when attractive with lively surfaces. Peach-gold margins surround aquamarine centers on both sides of this sharply struck piece. Triple die clashing is readily apparent on the obverse and reverse, with the diagnostic die cracks of the O-101a late die state on full display. Mint luster remains prominent throughout for great eye appeal.
