Bust Half Dollars
1827 50C Square Base 2, O-106, R.2, MS64 PCGS. The 1827 issue had a mintage exceeding 5 million pieces, explaining the necessity of 49 die pairs to accomplish the production. While some of the varieties are readily identified, many others show only subtle pick-up points. The O-106 is one of the latter, identified by several vertical lines extending into the shield crossbars. This is a sharply struck, satiny near-Gem with stone-gray centers enlivened by gold highlights. Blue and tan toning surrounds the stars and legends. An attractive and lustrous piece, it is tied for second in the Condition Census for the variety. The strike and surface quality are first-rate.
