Bust Half Dollars
1829 50C Small Letters, O-112a, R.2, MS65 PCGS. A series of parallel die lines between 9 of the date and star 13 normally makes attribution of O-112 easy, but the later die state is lapped, and the lines disappear. Line 3 of vertical shield stripe 5 extends upward to horizontal line 2 to help recognize the O-112a advanced die state. Tawny-gold luster at the margins surrounds lilac-gray centers of this sharply struck and appealing Gem example. It is tied for the finest O-112a according to Steve Herrman's Autumn 2016 reference listing. Population (all 1829 non-overdate varieties): 25 in 65 (4 in 65+), 4 finer (11/16).
