Reeded Edge Half Dollars
1836 50C Reeded Edge, GR-1, R.2, AU58 PCGS. CAC. The Thonnelier steam press ushered in a new era at the Mint, replacing the labor-intensive screw presses. The new press struck 1,200 reeded edge halves on November 8, 1836. An unrecorded number was likely struck at a later date, since the several hundred survivors (typically in VF to AU grades) suggests a larger emission. The present near-Mint example has the look of an Uncirculated coin despite an incomplete strike on the high points. The lustrous surfaces show few marks and are richly patinated peach-red, sea-green, and stone-gray. The left obverse exhibits a railroad (or broad wire) rim, which suggests growing pains with the new steam press.
