Seated Half Dollars
1839 50C No Drapery, WB-101, AU50 PCGS. The glossy and still-lustrous surfaces of this No Drapery half dollar display a thin veil of translucent golden toning, while the sharply struck devices retain much of their crisp definition despite 10 points of wear. Always popular as the first-year representative of Christian Gobrecht's intended Seated Liberty design, it is a mystery why more examples of the new design were not saved by collectors or as souvenirs by the public -- perhaps half dimes or dimes fulfilled that need. The present coin saw only brief circulation, with faint lines and abrasions visible with a lens, yet the eye appeal is undeniable. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 22 in 50, 91 finer (11/16).
