Seated Half Dollars
1841-O 50C WB-102, Die Pair 2, R.5, Medium O Mintmark, Baseball Die Cracks Reverse XF45 PCGS. Scarce Medium O Mintmark. Struck from the initial die marriage of the obverse and reverse as indicated by a full foot support. After a first batch of coins was struck, the heavily cracked reverse die was set aside while the obverse was paired with a different reverse. Later, the cracked original reverse was reused to strike a second batch of showing a later state of the obverse die with weak foot support. Combined, the two mintages make up the popular Baseball Die Crack Reverse variety where the pattern of reverse die cracks resembles the stitching on a baseball. This Choice XF example shows stone-gray surfaces with light wear and traces of mint luster at the borders. A previous example of this scarce variety realized $3,172.50 in our 2014 ANA Signature auction.
