Seated Half Dollars
1848-O 50C WB-101 MS64 PCGS. Unlisted Die Pair. On this unlisted die pair the obverse has a prominent die lump between 18 in the date that matches none of the obverse dies in Bill Bugert's 2011 New Orleans half dollar reference. The Bowers and Merena cataloger believed the die chip may be a "faint remnant of a misplaced 1." A die crack through (STAT)ES and light clash marks in the shield suggest this may be Reverse K. The Register of Seated Half Dollar Varieties Volume III: New Orleans Branch Mint 1840-O to 1853-O No Arrows (2011) identifies 13 obverse and 15 reverse dies that were employed to manufacture more than 3.1 million half dollars at the Louisiana facility in 1848. Given the issue's sizeable mintage, it is entirely possible that this is an undocumented variety. An excellent chance for the Seated half specialist to procure an important discovery coin.
When this near-Gem is held at an angle under a lamp, the violet-gray patina that dominates each side reveals pleasing shades of antique-gold, lavender, and ice-blue. The reverse motifs are fully detailed, and the obverse is boldly impressed with sharp definition on Liberty's head and foot support. All but star 8 show full centers.
