Seated Half Dollars
1856-O 50C WB-101, Die Pair 16, R.3, MS65 PCGS. CAC. A satiny example with lilac-gray patina and subtle gold accents. The strike is bold at Liberty's head and the surrounding star centers, with only minor weakness at the eagle's left (facing) talon. Struck from a late state of the dies, with a radial die crack from the dentil through star 1 to Liberty's hand. An additional crack connects stars 10 through 13. A huge mintage of more than 2.6 million halves has resulted in few Gem or finer examples. This is an original, lustrous coin with an impeccable provenance. Population: 23 in 65, 3 finer. CAC: 9 in 65, 2 finer (11/16).
Ex: Eliasberg Sale (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1966.
