Seated Half Dollars
1858 50C Type One Reverse, Repunched Date, WB-105, FS-301, MS66 PCGS. This is a supposedly common date with a mintage in excess of 4.2 million coins. However, Premium Gem examples such as this can only be described as extremely rare. This magnificent coin boasts vibrant, frosty luster over mostly brilliant surfaces with an arc of deep aqua-blue and golden toning on the upper obverse and lower reverse. A shallow planchet flaw occurs in the lower left obverse field near Liberty's wrist. Remnants of an inverted 1 are visible right of the 5 in the date. Wiley and Bugert explain: "This blundered date appears to have the date repunched over an inverted date. The remnants of an inverted 1 can be seen as two lumps between the 58. Measurements of the distance between the two 'lumps' verify they are the tip of the serif and left base of the 1." A stellar representative of the issue, likely the finest-known example of this Cherrypickers' variety. Population (all varieties included): 5 in 66, 0 finer (11/16).
