1861 50C Scott Restrike AU53 PCGS. In 1879, leading numismatic dealer J.W. Scott purchased the C.S.A. half dollar die from Ebenezer Locke Mason. Mason had bought it from Dr. B.F. Taylor, the New Orleans Mint Chief Coiner in 1861, when the four original Confederate half dollars were struck. Scott promptly acquired 500 1861-dated half dollars, planed down their reverses, and overstruck them with the Confederate die. This action somewhat flattened the dated side, as seen on the present restrike. The Confederate side is toned golden-brown and shows light wear. The dated side has rich aquamarine patina and a few thin marks made by a curious finder.
