Seated Half Dollars
1868-S 50C WB-101, Die Pair 8, R.3, MS65 PCGS. CAC. There are no "common" Uncirculated S-Mint half dollars from the 1860s, only those that are slightly less-scarce than others. The 1868-S falls into the challenging category, and it is very rare in Gem or finer grades. Perhaps because of its generous mintage (over 1.1 million pieces struck), the 1868-S is consistently underrated in high grades.
This Gem example beams cartwheel silver luster beneath dappled powder-gray and lilac toning. The strike is sharp through the centers with only minor weakness at some of the stars. Frosty surfaces show a few light abrasions but no distracting marks, and its natural appeal earns the sole CAC endorsement for the MS65 level. There are only three pieces numerically finer at both services combined. Population: 1 in 65, 2 finer. CAC: 1 in 65, 0 finer (11/16).
