Seated Half Dollars
1875-S 50C Very Small S, WB-101, Unlisted Die Pair, MS66 PCGS. Not surprisingly, a large number of die pairs were required to strike 3.2 million pieces at the San Francisco Mint for the year. The latest Wiley-Bugert reference identifies 22 die pairs. While the reverse die is possibly identifiable as a late die state of Reverse E, in our opinion the obverse die does not match any of those pictured, making this a new variety for the issue. Specialists will find the die of interest, while all Seated half enthusiasts will be impressed with the high quality of the present coin. The surfaces are satin-smooth, lustrous, and lightly toned in hues of lilac and gold. The strike is sharp except at the center of star 8 and the highest strands of Liberty's hair. PCGS has seen just a single coin numerically finer for all varieties. Population: 27 in 66 (3 in 66+), 1 finer (11/16).
