Seated Half Dollars
1881 50C Closed Bud, WB-102, MS65+ PCGS. CAC. The surfaces of this high-end Gem half dollar are fully prooflike on both sides, although PCGS does not designate prooflike surfaces on half dollars. Faint die lines in the denticles above ERICA confirm that this is indeed a circulation strike. Slight weakness at stars 7 to 9 and at Liberty's top hair strands as well as the eagle's left (facing) talons also suggest the prooflike circulation strike. Attractive orange-gold and blue toning cover the obverse, while the reverse adds mauve shades to the patina. Population: 16 in 65 (2 in 65+), 19 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 6 finer (11/16).
