Proof Seated Half Dollars
1860 50C PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Breen reports a net mintage of 525 specimens for the 1860 half dollar. Although 1,000 proofs were struck, nearly half of them were melted as unsold at the end of the year. This was the first time the Mint instituted a 13 cent fee for proofs, and demand declined as a result. Cameo proofs represent a minute fraction of the 1860 half dollars at PCGS, where less than 15% of submissions have met the requirements for such a designation.
This Premium Gem proof is entirely brilliant, appearing as it must have the day it was struck. The fields seem almost bottomless without any mentionable contact. As expected but not always seen, the devices are fully brought-up. This is simply a magnificent representative by any measure. Population: 6 in 66 (1 in 66+) Cameo, 3 finer. CAC: 4 in 66, 1 finer (11/16).
