Proof Seated Half Dollars
1861 50C PR64+ PCGS. The Mint ramped up proof production in 1860 and 1861 after successful sales in 1858 and 1859, but officials failed to consider the effects of a new 13 cent fee implemented in 1860. While 1,000 proof halves were manufactured in 1861, as many as 600 specimens were melted as unsold. An overlay of iridescent toning covers flashy surfaces in rainbow hues that glitter when rotated under a lamp. The visual appeal is a strong as the strike characteristics. Population: 24 in 64 (2 in 64+), 17 finer (10/16).
