Proof Seated Half Dollars
1864 50C PR65 PCGS. CAC. Aside from the few coins that were numismatically preserved, 1864 halves are very scarce and underrated in both business strike and proof formats. Collectors preferred proofs, yet only 470 pieces were struck in 1864 when all silver coinage was hoarded and disappeared from circulation as soon as it was minted. This exceptional Gem proof was well-preserved and survives with multicolor surfaces that gleam with lavender, blue, mint-green, gold, and pale-rose shades. The raised motifs are sharply struck and frosted with undesignated cameo contrast, surrounded by glassy-mirrored and colorfully toned fields. Population: 17 in 65, 7 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 5 finer (10/16).
