Proof Seated Half Dollars
1874 50C Arrows PR65 Cameo PCGS. As it had in 1853 through 1855, the Mint made a slight modification to the half dollar design starting in 1873, adding arrows flanking the date to signify what was effectively an indiscernible increase in weight. The arrows design was used for two years, ending in 1874. Merely 1,500 proofs were struck over the two-year period (700 specimens in 1874). All of the proof 1874 half dollars feature small arrowheads, a rare occurrence for circulation strikes but the norm for proofs. This high-end Gem Cameo example enjoys mirrored fields and sharp, frosted raised elements. Faint golden toning is deepest at the rims. Population: 5 in 65 (1 in 65+) Cameo, 1 finer (11/16).
