Proof Seated Half Dollars
1878 50C PR66 Cameo PCGS. WB-101. According to Breen, 820 proof Seated halves were coined during the first quarter of 1878. A total of 600 sets were delivered during that quarter, and another 200 sets in the second quarter. The remaining 20 proofs were apparently still on hand in January 1879, but Breen explains: "These all seem to have been sold during that year, none recorded as melted." The 2017 Guide Book and the Wiley-Bugert reference each cite a production of 800 half dollar proofs in 1878. Either way, survivors of similar quality are very rare.
The color palette on this amazing Premium Gem Cameo proof runs the gamut from shades of orange, yellow, blue, and green to rose, lavender, and violet. A rich coating of frost covers mostly brilliant central motifs on each side, generating the noted cameo contrast. A loupe reveals tiny flecks scattered throughout, though none of them are distracting. Population: 7 in 66 (2 in 66+) Cameo, 1 finer (11/16).
