Proof Seated Half Dollars
1888 50C PR65 PCGS. Struck during the decade that saw remarkably low mintages for Seated halves, the lack of high-grade business strikes results in a "coattails effect" that influences demand for Gem or finer proofs to this day. Only 832 proof halves were produced. This example is lightly and attractively toned in blue and powder-gray shades on the obverse with powerful mirrors in the fields. The reverse is less extensively toned in pale-champagne hues. The motifs are sharply defined and frosty throughout -- strongly contrasted on the reverse, but less-so on the obverse. Population: 16 in 65, 17 finer (11/16).
