Barber Half Dollars
1900-S 50C MS66 PCGS. Ex: Friend. David Akers describes the 1900-S as "one of the unheralded rarities of the Barber half dollar series." Our experience is similar, with few top quality pieces appearing in past auction sales. In more than two decades, we have only offered 13 pieces graded better than MS65, including eight MS66 and five MS67; four of these Superb Gem appearances were by the same coin, the Eliasberg specimen, while the fifth was an offering of the fabulous Price coin. Three of our previous MS66 offerings are earlier appearances of the Friend coin. This piece is finer than the Pryor coin and nearly as magnificent as the outstanding Price and Eliasberg Superb Gems.
This piece is struck from different dies than the Price coin, though with a nearly identical die crack across the base of the neck truncation. The mintmark is in a different position, centered beneath the tail feathers. On the Price coin, the mintmark is right of center and canted to the right. Subtle splashes of champagne and deeper gold toning accompany delightful chestnut-brown surfaces on this sharply defined 1900-S half dollar. Population: 4 in 66, 1 finer (11/16).
