Proof Barber Half Dollars
1900 50C PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. Proof half dollar production surged in the first year of the new century, reaching numbers unseen since 1892 and 1894. A total of 912 specimens were manufactured, many of them carefully preserved as souvenirs. Locating a high-grade example with or without Cameo contrast should be eminently achievable for most serious collectors, yet the story is entirely different when it comes to proofs with Ultra Cameo contrast. Any Ultra or Deep Cameo coin is rare, but this PR68 represents the absolute highest quality that one could obtain for the issue. NGC and PCGS each report two PR68 Ultra Cameo submissions with none finer (11/16). Breathtaking white-on-black contrast characterizes pristine, brilliant surfaces. Eye appeal is terrific.
