Early Dollars
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves, B-1, BB-21, R.2, Fine 12 NGC. After punching the central device in the die, the engraver set about entering the stars, letters, and numerals, one at a time, working backward as the die is a mirror image of the struck coin. He probably punched the 5 and 9 first, then mistakenly reached for a digit 1 punch, and entered the next element. He likely then uttered an 18th century unmentionable before continuing his work, punching a 7 over the errant 1. This pleasing piece has smooth surfaces with rich steel-blue and pale gold toning.
