Early Dollars
1797 $1 10x6 Stars, Large Letters, B-3, BB-71, R.2, VF35 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. A line of tiny nicks on the cheekbone and some angled, Mint-made adjustment marks on the central reverse are the only marks to note on this Choice VF early dollar, which displays remarkably smooth and attractive bluish-gray fields and pleasing silver-gray patina on the high points of the motifs. BB-71 is known as the first of three die marriages to be struck dated 1797 -- each is a distinct Guide Book variety. Usually early dollar collectors seek all three types to complete the year as part of a Draped Bust set. The Bowers numbering system indicates BB-71 was the first of the 1797 dollars off the coinage presses for the year. If so, some 10x6 Stars, Large Letters type may have been struck during 1797 -- if any of the 1797-dated dollars were -- while most of the other 1797 varieties were likely struck in 1798.
