Early Dollars
1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Small Letters, B-2, BB-72, R.4, VF25 PCGS. Bowers Die State I. As recently as 25 years ago, the Bolender-2 Small Letters, 9x7 variety was considered a great rarity of the Draped Bust series. In theory, it was a rarer than 1794 Flowing Hair dollars. Common sense has since prevailed, and current estimates suggest as many as 200 to 300 pieces survive. The B-2, BB-72 Small Letters variety is still, by far, the scarcest of the 1797 dollars and in strong demand. This solid VF25 example is sharper on the obverse than the reverse as usually seen, a function of die lapping on the reverse that reduced the rim and subjected the reverse elements to premature wear. Some light porosity joins a few small abrasions and lines on the attractive silver-gray surfaces, which deepen to blue-gray in protected areas. Two or three inconsequential rim nicks do not diminish the pleasing eye appeal. Population: 13 in 25, 40 finer (11/16).
From The Palos Verdes Collection.
