Early Dollars
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, 10 Arrows, B-21, BB-107, R.5, XF40 PCGS. Bowers Die State II. The diagnostic and interesting "tadpole" die break above the 7 and 9 in the date confirms the obverse, while a headless stick among only 10 fully formed arrows does the same for the reverse. Paired together, the two dies comprise the scarce BB-107 variety (rated R.5). Dappled blue accents over golden-gray toning covers both sides of this sharply struck early dollar. A tiny indent on the rim near the second S in STATES may be a minute planchet flaw. In any case, marks are minimal and the eye appeal is substantial for this ideal midgrade example.
