Early Dollars
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Close Date, B-9, BB-121, R.4, XF40 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. Traces of silver luster remain in Liberty's hair and around the date and stars, while the well-centered reverse displays remaining mint luster as well. The BB-121 is popular as "The Amateur Diecutter's Reverse," where the field stars above the eagle are a jumble and several other shortcomings appear on the crudely formed reverse elements. The reverse die is used only on BB-121, a scarce R.4 variety, in demand for its unusual (and sloppy) die work.
