Early Dollars
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Close Date, B-25, BB-123, R.4, VF35 PCGS. Die State II. Pointed 9, Line Star Pattern. Whisker variety with a tiny point down from the lower edge of the chin; stars 3 and 4 overlap the clouds. This is an important early die state. The reverse has a vertical crack from the border to the stem end, yet the peripheral obverse die cracks have not yet developed. In the Bowers-Borckardt reference, the comment is made that only one example was known to the authors, although several are now known. Both sides of this piece have light silver-gray surfaces with wisps of blue color. The surfaces are excellent, although probably cleaned long ago. The obverse has vertical adjustment marks up from the lower border.
