Seated Dollars
1840 $1 Repunched Stars AU58 PCGS. OC-2, High R.4. A Top 30 Variety. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/b. Silver bullion was in short supply and the demand for silver dollars was limited in 1840 when the first Seated Liberty dollars were struck. Just 61,005 pieces made up the inaugural mintage. This example is prooflike on both sides although undesignated as such on the green label holder. Stars 6 and 7 are repunched at their lower outside star points, a Top 30 variety according to seateddollarvarieties.com. Attractive lilac and orange-gold toning joins iridescent shades at the borders. A few small marks are scattered across the surfaces, well-hidden in the dappled patina, and the strike is uniformly sharp except at the top hair strands and some rounding on star 9.
