Seated Dollars
1855 $1 MS62 PCGS. OC-1. The Mint employed a single pair of dies to manufactured 26,000 circulation-strike Seated dollars and 60 to 75 proofs in 1855. The new online reference published by Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing (seateddollarvarieties.com) proposes a survival rate of 300 business strikes, adding: "1855 is a key date in the Liberty Seated Dollar series, part of the low mintage run of coins minted in the 1850's. With a mintage ranking of 18th out of 47 the collector would expect that it would not be difficult to locate, but that's usually not the case. ... Mint State examples are very rare." PCGS reports 22 Uncirculated survivors, but that figure is likely inflated by resubmissions. As always, the strike falls short of full with softness on the stars, head, sandal, and wingtips. What this coin lacks in sharpness, though, it makes up for in attractive golden toning with pale blue accents. Semiprooflike and lightly marked. Population: 10 in 62, 8 finer (11/16).
