Seated Dollars
1859-O $1 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. The 1859-O Seated Liberty dollar, with a mintage of 360,000 pieces, is among the highest production issues in the series. PCGS and NGC combined report nearly 960 Mint State submissions, mostly in the MS60 to MS62 range. Select examples can be located with patience and searching, but near-Gems such as the present offering are rare with only 55 pieces seen by the two services. Higher-grade coins are for all practical purposes unavailable, with only three submissions reported.
Whispers of grayish-tan patina are slightly more extensive and deeper on the obverse of this high-end near-Gem. Lustrous surfaces exhibit well-struck design elements, including strong definition on Liberty's head, the star centrils, and the eagle's plumage. A few minor obverse scuffs preclude Gem classification. This coin is well deserving of the CAC endorsement, and worthy of a generous bid. Population: 31 in 64 (2 in 64+), 2 finer. CAC: 6 in 64, 1 finer (11/16).
