Proof Trade Dollars
1878 T$1 PR65+ Cameo PCGS. CAC. Although regular issue Trade dollars were produced by the Carson City and San Francisco Mints in 1878, the Philadelphia Mint struck only proofs. A mere 900 pieces were issued, and the present coin is one of the better examples extant. Magnificent rainbow toning envelops the surfaces with violet, blue, red, and green toning on both sides with a circular window of pale russet on the obverse and lemon-yellow shades around the Liberty's portrait.
The sharply struck devices display delightful cameo contrast against the watery fields, which is duly recognized by the Cameo designation as well as the Plus designation (the sole 1878 Cameo proof at this level to be so-honored). This well-preserved, high-end Gem has great eye appeal and would make a wonderful addition to any proof or Trade dollar collection. Population: 13 in 65 (1 in 65+), 11 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 3 finer (11/16).
From The Sounder Collection, Part II.
