Proof Trade Dollars
1879 T$1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. A robust 1879 mintage of 1,541 proofs was struck in anticipation of strong collector demand, which never fully materialized as the controversial Trade dollars were phased out in favor of the new Morgan silver dollars. Only proofs were made for Trade dollars through 1885, although the rare 1884 and 1885 representatives were not official Mint issues. This contrasted near-Gem proof displays a ring of blue and gold border toning surrounding faintly toned silver centers. A few delicate field lines do not impair the sharply struck central devices or the nicely mirrored fields. Population: 53 in 64 (2 in 64+) Cameo, 36 finer (10/16).
