Mercury Dimes
1916-D 10C AU58 Full Bands PCGS Secure. CAC. A pressing need for Barber quarters prevented the Denver Mint from striking more than a scant mintage of Mercury dimes in 1916. Thanks to an earlier and more-plentiful Philadelphia mintage, the Denver production of 264,000 pieces was released without fanfare -- well after the novelty of the new Winged Liberty design had subsided. As a result, the 1916-D sits alone as the unquestioned key issue for the series.
This attractive example displays original steel-gray toning with underlying blue and gold accents. Faint rub on the fasces and on Liberty's winged cap accounts for the borderline Mint State grade. The coin is ideal for a high-grade circulated set, and it fits equally well into a Mint State collection. A few tiny ticks do not distract from the smooth and attractive surfaces that glow with soft mint luster. CAC endorsement adds to the appeal. Current population data shows just two AU58 examples have received the Plus designation by PCGS (10/16).
