Walking Liberty Half Dollars
1933-S 50C MS67+ NGC. The onset of the Great Depression greatly diminished the country's need for larger denomination coinage. As a result, no half dollars were struck in 1930, 1931, and 1932. In 1933 only the San Francisco mint struck this denomination, and then only 1.7 million pieces were produced. These coins were remarkably well-produced, a fact that is notable after the uniformly weak strikes seen throughout the 1920s. The keen observer of the Walking Liberty half series might well say, "Show me a weakly struck 1933-S!" This is certainly a fully detailed example, as expected. It also displays bright, radiant mint luster. The centers are nearly brilliant while the margins are surrounded by deep russet-brown patina. This MS67+ shows no abrasions, nor would any be expected on such a superior coin. Census: 10 in 67 (5 in 67+), 0 finer (11/16).
