SMS Kennedy Half Dollars
1966 50C SMS SP68 Deep Cameo PCGS. In the absence of proof sets, the Mint issued Special Mint Sets in 1965, '66, and '67. These coins were midway between regular issues and proofs. They were struck once on unpolished planchets but with heavily polished working dies, contrasting with proof coinage which involved heavily polished dies striking a polished planchet twice. Moreover, SMS coins were not as carefully handled at the Mint as were the proofs of years past, resulting in some pieces leaving the Mint with small contact marks. These factors make high-grade, deeply contrasted SMS coins scarce and highly sought-after, and they make the present SP68 Deep Cameo 1966 half dollar a major condition rarity and Registry Set essential. The coin is brilliant and untoned with stark white-on-black contrast that rivals true proof coinage. The quality and eye appeal are about as magnificent as is possible for an SMS half dollar.
