Morgan Dollars
1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3A, MS62 ANACS. A Top 100 Variety. Known as the "Capped Die" Variety, VAM-3 was shunned by collectors during the 1970s, due to the unfamiliar appearance of the mintmark. Eventually, numismatists identified it is a Large over Small CC variety, with the die chips added by a mint worker to conceal the wrong-sized mintmark. In 2012, Lance Newman noticed that a minority of examples had die gouges near the first A in AMERICA. This late die state was designated VAM-3A. A lustrous semikey Carson City dollar with light butter-gold toning and relatively few marks for the MS62 level.
