1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS63 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. The unmistakable, raggedly-done overmintmark shows a Large CC over Small CC (the so-called Capped Die) VAM-3 variety was discovered in stages -- the reverse by Art Kagin in October, 1962, and the obverse by Leroy Van Allen in December, 1965. The nuances of the obverse die are less obvious but equally interesting, with recutting of the date visible on all four digits. This Select Uncirculated example is brilliant and frosty with strong silver luster. A few light abrasions determine the MS63 grade. The strike is sharp although not fully complete over the ear.
