Morgan Dollars
1886-O $1 MS64 PCGS. Despite the mintage of more than 10.7 million pieces, the 1886-O Morgan dollar is a rare issue in high grade and always has been. Although some coins were released into circulation, most of the mintage was held in government storage at the time of issue, as the coins were not needed or wanted in the national economy at that time. No really large numbers were ever seen in the Treasury releases of later years, however, so it is likely that many coins were melted under the provisions of the Pittman Act in 1918. This attractive Choice example exhibits sharply detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster throughout. There is a faint die crack from the rim to the 1 in the date. The well-preserved brilliant surfaces show only minor signs of contact and eye appeal is outstanding. PCGS has graded only seven numerically finer examples (10/16).
From The Stichter Collection.
